Modrý Portugal, also known as Blauer Portugieser, is a traditional variety with a long history of cultivation in Suchá. Despite its rich heritage, it is quite challenging to grow due to its sensitivity to climatic conditions.
The 2016 vintage was marked by a very early and rapid arrival of spring, followed by frost that damaged the young shoots of the vines. Fortunately, the relatively high location and favorable slopes of our vineyards limited the loss to about 10% of the harvest. However, the spring frost influenced the entire growing season.
The summer began sunny and warm but was followed by a rainy August, causing many of the ripening berries to crack. We successfully prevented the spread of rot in the damaged berries using liquid glass. This intervention resulted in a significant number of uniquely dried raisins, concentrating sugar and developing new aromas in the juice. Consequently, we harvested an exclusive quality of Modrý Portugal, with an exceptionally high sugar level for this variety, resulting in an unprecedented 13.47% alcohol content in the wine.
The mash was slightly concentrated by removing 10% of the juice for rosé, and the wine was macerated on skins for four weeks. This process yielded a young wine with a remarkable combination of qualities rarely seen in this grape variety: powerful alcohol, high acidity, and distinctly pronounced tannins. These characteristics, uncharacteristic of Modrý Portugal, should never naturally occur together, making this vintage truly extraordinary.
To further enhance this unique vintage, we aged the wine for 18 months in new oak barrels, creating a wine with immense aging potential that we will remember for the rest of our lives.
Spontaneously fermented, unfiltered and unfined organic wine.
